    Altron’s Bytes UK Acquires Phoenix Software - Bytes UK, a wholly-owned subsidiary of South African JSE-listed technology company Altron, has acquired UK-based IT reseller Phoenix Software, an end-to-end IT solutions provider with a solid 27-year history. The combined entity will have revenues of £400 million and about 480 employees, enabling it to become an important scale partner to many of the major global IT vendors, and to work with clients across all sectors.

    Altron acquires Australian fleet logistics operation - As part of its strategy to strengthen its position in international markets, JSE listed Allied Electronics Corporation Limited (Altron) today announced that its wholly owned subsidiary, Altech Netstar, had acquired 100% of the shareholding of Fleet Logistics (Pty) Ltd, an Australian fleet management business based in New South Wales, Australia. Trading as EZY2C, the company specialises in fleet management solutions for local government, the car rental industry, and commercial customers.

    Altron disposes of Crabtree to Siemens AG, subject to regulatory approval - JSE listed Allied Electronics Corporation Limited (Altron) today announced that its wholly owned subsidiary, Power Technologies Proprietary Limited (Powertech), has entered into an agreement whereby it will dispose of Crabtree Electrical Accessories (Crabtree) to Siemens AG. Crabtree produces and distributes low-voltage components for the South African construction market, including light switches, power outlets, cable routing systems, and adapters. The disposal of Crabtree is part of the implementation of Altron’s business strategy to focus on its information technology and telecommunications business and exit its manufacturing operations. The transaction is subject to the grant of approvals by the relevant competition authorities.

    Altron appoints new Group Chief Executive - JSE listed Allied Electronics Corporation Limited (Altron) today announced the appointment of Mr Mteto Nyati, a respected ICT executive and business leader, as its new Group Chief Executive. Nyati was previously the Chief Executive Officer for MTN South Africa and brings a wealth of experience to the Group. He joined MTN as Group Chief Enterprise Officer in October 2014, after working at Microsoft South Africa since 2008. At Microsoft, Nyati served as Managing Director for the South African operations, and also had a short stint as the group’s General Manager for the MEA Emerging Regions. Prior to that he was the Director of IBM Global Technology Services at IBM South Africa.

    Altron announces Interim Financial Results - During the past six months the continuing operations of JSE-listed Allied Electronics Corporation Limited (Altron) presented a significantly improved performance with a 5%* increase in revenue to R6.8 billion and a 19%* increase in EBITDA to R501million.     Investment group to invest R400 million into Altron - JSE listed Allied Electronics Corporation Limited (Altron) today announced that it has reached agreement with Value Capital Partners Proprietary Limited (VCP) regarding a capital investment of R400 million into Altron, subject to regulatory and shareholder approval. The investment will also see a change to the Altron control structure in line with Altron’s stated intention to move from a family controlled and managed business to independent management. VCP is an investment company founded by Antony Ball, founder and ex-CEO of Brait, and Sam Sithole, ex-CFO of Brait. The capital invested by VCP will help Altron accelerate growth plans in line with Altron’s stated goal to focus on its core IT operations. Altron will issue new shares to VCP which will provide VCP with an approximate 15% stake.

    Med-e-Mass partners with City of Johannesburg to roll-out eHealth @Joburg to benefit patients - Med-e-Mass, part of the Altron group of companies and a leading developer of management applications for the healthcare industry, has partnered with the City of Johannesburg to improve healthcare delivery by transitioning from paper-based patient health records to an electronic health platform. The digitisation project will create a single body of patient records easily accessible to healthcare workers.

    Altron signs binding agreements to dispose of Aberdare Group to leading Chinese cable manufacturer for R1,2 billion - Power Technologies Proprietary Limited (Powertech), a wholly owned subsidiary of JSE listed Allied Electronics Corporation Limited (Altron), eners into binding agreements with Hengtong Optic – Electric Co Limited (Hengtong) regarding the sale of a controlling equity stake in Aberdare Cables South Africa and a 100% equity stake in Aberdare Europe, comprising its Spanish and Portuguese operations, for approximately R1,2 billion in cash.

    Competition Tribunal approves disposal of Altech Autopage post-paid GSM subscriber bases to Cell C, MTN and Vodacom - The sale of Altech Autopage’s Cell C subscriber base to Cell C (Pty) Ltd (Cell C), its MTN subscriber base to Mobile Telephone Networks (Pty) Ltd (MTN) and its Vodacom subscriber base to Vodacom (Pty) Ltd (Vodacom), respectively, has been approved by the competition authorities, subject to certain conditions pertaining to those Altech Autopage employees affected by the Altech Autopage Disposal.

    Two leading healthcare IT companies, PQ Africa’s QEDI and Bytes’ MediSwitch in the medical claims forwarding industry, merge to form an internet healthcare and e-commerce partnership in the form of Digital Healthcare Solutions.

    USKO is re-branded as Bytes Technology Group Limited (Bytes) and the IT interests of Fintech are purchased by BTG to consolidate the group’s IT under Bytes.

    The Altron Chairman and Chief Executive Officer positions (both previously held by Dr Venter) are split. Robert Venter is appointed Chief Executive of Altron,
    with Dr Venter retaining the Chairmanship of the group.

    The JSE-listed Autopage Holdings is purchased and significant growth is recorded in all the group’s acquisitions.

    The group’s thrust into information technology is spearheaded by the listing of Fintech in 1986.

    The group comprises holding company Ventron, with five listed subsidiaries, Altron, Altech, Fintech, Powertech and Autopage Holdings, each operating in a well- defined field of technology.

    In 1987, Fintech acquires Rank Xerox South Africa and Altech acquires UEC Projects.

    In the same year Powertech acquires the remaining shareholding in ASEA Sweden and Stromberg South Africa from Stromberg in Finland.

    In 1989 Fintech acquires a majority shareholding in NCR Corporation of South Africa.

    In late 1984 Powertech acquires Scottish Cables from BICC.

    In 1985 Powertech buys a controlling interest in Aberdare Cables and then merges Scottish Cables and ASEA W/Aberdare to form South Africa’s largest cable company trading under the Aberdare brand.

    In 1983 Africa’s largest corporation, Anglo American Corporation, purchases a 20% shareholding in the Ventron Group.

    In 1985 Altron’s revenues reach R320 million with a market capitalisation of R358 million.

    A new holding company, Allied Electronics Corporation (Altron), is created and positions Altech under it as its telecommunications subsidiary and Powertech as the power electronics subsidiary

    Altron has approximately 3 700 employees and annual revenue of R89 million.

    In 1979, Powertech is listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.

    Powertech acquires the Willard Battery Group from the ESB Group (USA) making Powertech South Africa’s largest auto motive/industrial battery manufacturer.

    Powertech acquires Litemaster, South Africa’s largest manufacturer of electrical accessories as well as Crabtree Electric from the Crabtree Group (UK).

    After rapid expansion by Allied Electric, one of South Africa’s leading telecommunications manufacturers, STC (UK), is acquired from ITT Corporation (USA), and subsequently Altech (in 1974) becomes the holding company of the group.

    In 1975, Allied Technologies (Altech) is listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.

    Allied Electric was founded by Bill Venter, a 33-year old telecoms engineer, and three colleagues. Total staff complement was six people. Founder and chairman of Altron, Dr Bill Venter (left).

    Allied Electric begins business as a designer and manufacturer of semi-conductor rectifier equipment, battery chargers, inverters, variable speed drives, DC motor controls, DC power supplies, electronic signal equipment and transformers. Components are distributed on behalf of leading French, USA and UK principals and manufacturers.
